The First Thanksgiving and Perspectives on Native Americans
Thanksgiving Traditions
To begin our class today, I would like you to take a few minutes to talk to someone next to you about your favorite traditions during thanksgiving.
Then we will talk about what we thought the first Thanksgiving was like and some questions we might have about that event.
Crash Course Thanksgiving
Next, we will learn more about thanksgiving by watching the following video.
You may have noticed as well how different the settlements in the south were compared to the settlements in the North. This is because they moved to the region for different reasons. The Virginians moved there to make money and hopefully find gold. They were not focused on families or creating a community which led to having a few very rich people and many servants.
The Puritans were focused on having a community based on morals and religion. This means they were very family oriented and community focused.
Different Viewpoints
Finally, we will look at this website together and decide how each of these different people viewed each other when they met.
When people meet each other they can choose to see each other for their similarities, or they can see each other for their differences. For homework I would like you to use the article above to determine how the French, Spanish, and English chose to work with the Natives. Did they see each other for their similarities? Or for their differences? Back up your opinions with 2 examples for each group from the article.
