Now that we have seen the way that Native American societies changed because of European contact, we need to go deeper. Our goal for today is to learn more about some of the Native American societies that existed before the Europeans arrived. To plot our knowledge, we will be creating our own "Google My Maps". Please follow the steps below to complete the work for today.
The choices of Native Nations you can pick from are:
Scroll down in the "More" list until you see "Google My Maps". Click on "Google My Maps".
Step 4: Add Auburn, Maine to your map
Type Auburn Maine into the search bar of the map.
Once it pops up in Auburn, click the button that says "Add to Map".
Step 5: Draw a Line
Click on the "Draw a Line" Icon underneath the search bar. When the drop down menu appears, click on "Add a Line or Shape".
Click near Auburn as your starting point.
Click on a town nearby Auburn.
Click on another town nearby Auburn.
Connect the line back to the Auburn dot. *Make sure that you click on the Auburn dot so it will connect the lines and make a shape.
Give your shape a name.
Step 6: Decide which Native American Society you would like to research
You may choose from the list on the board. *All groups must have a different nation.
Step 7: Research the following details about your nation.
Location
Culture/religion
Population
Economic system
Diet
System of Government
Significant Geography (i.e. did they rely on a particular geographic feature such as a river, mountain, specific kind of soil, or access to the ocean to survive?)
Hint: You can see this geography on your map if you change the base map to satellite or terrain. These options can be found at the bottom of the key icon on the left.
Politics (i.e. which societies did they get along with, which did they hate).
Step 8: Plot your information on your map.
Add your findings to your map by making different points for your subjects.
Create a shape that roughly shows the borders of your nation before European contact.
You can add pictures to each of your points by clicking on the camera icon on the point.
Step 9: Share your map with me.
Click the "Share" button that can be found at the top of the key on the left hand side.
Share your map to me.
Awesome! Thank you for your hard work today. I will compile all of the maps so that we can use them to examine what life was like for Native American societies before the Europeans arrived.
